If annihilating old educational film reels sounds like the only good hobby left, Film Strip Club is here to validate that impulse.
Film Strip Club meets once a month at Austin Public Library’s Howson Branch in West Austin. Sessions run about an hour and a half and begin with a screening of the previous month’s creations on a 16‑millimeter projector. Participants manipulate 16mm film directly — drawing, painting, scratching and cutting — and the library provides art supplies and some film stock.
The program is free and open to the public. It’s run by Justin Green in partnership with the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI), which supplies equipment, archival reels and professionally digitizes members’ films so attendees receive digital copies.
