The Big Picture

Look: the food world keeps inventing ways to make pride feel like an annual performance review. The Michelin Guide released its 2026 update and Austin emerged with tangible proof that our dining scene is still levelling up. Two local restaurants—Fabrik and Kappo Kappo—earned one Michelin star apiece this year, and Barley Swine’s GM and sommelier Stefan Davis received a special award for outstanding service.

What Changed

Michelin added only three new starred restaurants across Texas in 2026, and two of those are in Austin. Fabrik, led by chef Je Wallerstein, was upgraded from a green star to one Michelin star. Kappo Kappo, the Japanese-French spot run by twin chefs Haru and Gohei Kishi, joined the list as a new one-star recipient. Meanwhile, la Barbecue lost its one star and was moved to Michelin’s Recommended list. The guide did not add any Austin restaurants to its Bib Gourmand or Recommended selections this year, with previously included spots largely unchanged.
