The Big Picture

Life is short and ACL Fest is long; CapMetro says it just made the in-and-out less fiddly. The agency rolled out a tap-to-pay system for buses that accepts credit and debit cards and mobile wallets, and it’s promoting specific bus routes, Night Owl service and Bikeshare options for festival-goers heading to Zilker Park.

If you hate downloading apps at 2 a.m., this is for you: CapMetro’s tap-to-pay removes the need to use the Umo app for passes, per the agency’s press release.

What Changed

Previously, riders who wanted a simple contactless option often needed the Umo app for passes; CapMetro now accepts tap-to-pay on buses systemwide, according to the release. The announcement also highlights three routes useful for ACL attendees: Routes 3 and 803 toward Barton Springs and North Lamar on the east side of Zilker, and Route 30 to the west side of the park. CapMetro confirmed Night Owl buses run until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays during the festival, and Rail service runs until 12:30 a.m. each festival night.

This is a logistics upgrade, not an event change — think less phone fumbling, more getting where you need to be.

What's Next

Use tap-to-pay on CapMetro buses during ACL Fest, board Routes 3, 803 or 30 for Zilker-area stops, catch Night Owl buses until 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday, or take CapMetro Rail until 12:30 a.m. each festival night. CapMetro also recommends Bikeshare and a Bikeshare valet located at 1732 Toomey Rd; riders can check dock locations in the Bikeshare App. For full details and the special events page, see the agency release at https://austin.culturemap.com/news/city-life/acl-festival-bus-bike-transportation/ or call 512-474-1200.

Go: use your wallet, not your storage closet of festival apps, and maybe leave your charger for someone who actually needs it.
