The Big Picture

The city’s gig economy just got one fewer arithmetic headache: Metropolis Technologies is bringing its Park & Play program to downtown Austin, offering a flat $5 parking fee for musicians for the duration of each gig. The program launches Nov. 2 at four parking facilities and will use QR codes from participating venues to verify musician status.

This is pitched as a way to ease the cost and hassle of hauling gear in and out of downtown shows, and several local music organizations helped design the rollout.

What Changed

Instead of paying standard hourly or tiered garage rates, verified musicians will pay a single $5 flat fee while they’re performing. Four garages are committed at launch: Alto (924 E 7th St.), Lavaca Plaza (504 Lavaca St.), Frost Bank Tower (171 E 4th St.), and Hotel Indigo (505 Ash St., select music venues only). Verification requires a QR code provided by participating venues such as Antone’s, Mohawk, Cheer Up Charlies and others.

Park & Play first ran in Nashville and expanded to 25 facilities there; CultureMap reports Nashville musicians saved nearly $1 million in a year under the program.

What's Next

The program goes live Nov. 2. Musicians who want to use it should confirm that their venue is participating and obtain the venue-provided QR code for verification; CultureMap lists the initial participating venues and the four launch garages in downtown Austin. The story does not specify exact hours of eligibility, whether the $5 covers load-in/out outside performance times, or how long the verification QR remains valid, so performers should check with their venue or the listed garages before driving in.

Yes, it’s a small victory. No, it does not fix every gig-economy indignity — but $5 is easier to calculate at 2 a.m. than the rest of your life.
