The Big Picture

First Light Books, the Hyde Park bookstore that moved into a former post office, will open a second Austin location inside the former St. Luke United Methodist Church at 1306 W. Lynn St. The owners say the plan converts the sanctuary into a bookstore and a café serving coffee, light fare, beer and wine while hosting author events, book clubs and kids’ programming.

This matters now because the congregation closed at the end of 2024 and the property’s new zoning — approved by City Council in April — allows a bookstore, café, gallery and offices while keeping the 1958 sanctuary intact.

What Changed

The property moved from an inactive congregation and community-use building to a preservation-focused commercial plan after 18 proposals were considered; First Light’s proposal was the only one of those 18 to offer preservation, the owners’ representative told the Planning Commission in March. Neighbors and the Old West Austin Neighborhood Association supported the plan.

Where the church once served as a polling place, childcare center and AA meeting spot, First Light plans to add its roster of community activities — including expanded chess nights, daily story time, reading clubs and culinary events — to the Clarksville location.

What's Next

First Light expects to open in fall 2027. Design details and renderings are expected to be shared in early 2027; the first shop (Hyde Park) has a membership program priced at $99 a year for daily drip coffee and discounts, with a $250 patron tier also available. The CultureMap article does not provide exact hours, a menu, or a booking link for the Clarksville location.
