The Big Picture

This is about a magazine shop trying to drag people out of doomscroll purgatory. Tomo Mags — which opened a brick-and-mortar at 411 Brazos St., #101, in January 2026 — launched a monthly News Reading Club that held its sold-out debut on Sept. 19 at the Thompson Hotel across the street.

What Changed

Owner Vico Puentes heard customers say the news made them anxious or that they skipped it altogether, so he piloted a structured, book-club-style format for current events. Each session centers on a single theme and sends attendees five to seven articles vetted using the Trust Project's eight Trust Indicators; meetings break into small groups with facilitators and end with resource lists linking to civic actions.

What's Next

Attendance is free (sessions cap RSVPs at 90 with organizers expecting around 50 actual attendees). A companion workbook is available for purchase at the Tomo Mags website: https://tomomags.com/newsreadingclub#workbook. Organizers post updates and details on a dedicated Instagram page.

Bring curiosity, not a lecture. This is a shop trying to teach people how to read the news without leaving them feeling like they swallowed a headline whole — which, in this city, counts as cultural service.
